NAIROBI: Claudio Berardelli, the Italian athletes coach who has handled several Kenyan runners was released by a Nairobi court on a Sh500,000 bond pending investigations into doping allegations yesterday.
Milimani Chief Magistrate Daniel Ogembo in his ruling granted Berardelli bond or a cash bail of Sh200,000, saying the prosecution failed to show compelling reasons as to why he should be detained in police custody for another 10 days.
The Kenyan-based coach was arrested in Eldoret last Tuesday and arraigned in court the following day where police were granted five days to complete investigations.
The magistrate concurred with the submissions by lawyer Julius Kemboi who is representing the suspect that his client is a well-known Kenyan-based coach who has worked and invested in the country for 11 years.
Kemboi said the coach is good at training 800 metres and marathon athletes and even 10 of his students among them Alfred Kirwa Yego, Janet Jepkosgei and Dickson Kipchumba were in court to offer support.
