Kenya Forest Research Institute (Kefri) has launched a Sh80 million research centre in Migori county. Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources Cabinet secretary Prof Judi Wakhungu who presided over the launch said the new centre will serve four counties on Lake Victoria basin.
“The centre will undertake forestry research to intervene in environmental challenges facing four of the lake basin counties, namely Migori, Homa Bay, Kisii and Nyamira,” she said. Kefri director Dr Ben Chikamai said the centre will develop specific technologies in the fields of agroforestry for soil fertility improvement and land productivity.
“The centre will also help in rehabilitation of degraded water catchments, natural forests and hilltops; propagation, management and utilisation of bamboo; efficient production of charcoal and biomass to enhance environmental conservation and improved livelihoods,” he said.
