Federico faces 6 counts in doping case, remanded until Monday

Athletes manager Federico Rosa was yesterday charged with six counts of doping and ruining the reputations of two Kenyan athletes. Rosa, who appeared before Kibera Senior Principal Magistrate Benard Ochoi, however, denied the charges of conspiring with others to injure the reputations of Elijah Kiprono and Ritah Jeptoo by administering prohibited substances.

The Italian sports manager through his lawyer Moses Kurgat applied for the court to release his passport for traveling to Monaco to join his team at today’s IAAF Diamond League.

He argued that he manages top athletes and his absence at major events would be a set- back to the runners, hence the reason he is seeking his passport to travel to the Monaco and London Diamond Leagues, Bogota Marathon and the Rio Olympic Games all events between July 14 and August 22.

Ochoi, however, ordered Federico be remanded at Gigiri Police Station until Monday, July 18 when he will give a verdict. “I will rule on this case on Monday because I have to go through all the applications before making judgment. I cannot decide now whether to release him on cash bail or bond because when I ruled on Wednesday last week he was a suspect but he is now an accused person.

He (Federico) will be remanded at Gigiri Police Station until Monday,” Ochoi directed. In Milimani Law Courts a magistrate rejected prosecution application seeking seven more days to continue holding a clinical officer linked to similar doping allegations.

Instead trial magistrate Martha Mutuku granted the suspect Samson Kiprotich Talei a clinical officer at St Luke’s Othorpaedic and Trauma Hospital in Eldoret bail of Sh 50,000 pending investigations. In her ruling the magistrate said prosecution has failed to give compelling reasons why they needed seven more days.

She also directed the suspect to be reporting to the investigating officer once a week until the police complete investigations. The suspect was ordered to appear in court on Monday for further direction. Prosecution through senior state counsel Duncan Ondimu had sought more time saying that the suspect was arrested on July 8 at Soi Health care in Uasin Gishu County by the Anti- Narcotics Police Unit.

He also informed the court that police are pursuing crucial leads in the case which may require extensive travelling to various towns such as Eldoret, Kitale, Iten and ,Kapsabet to record witness statements.
